Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) has been sponsored by Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys Association of Pakistan, Karachi. It was set up through the Sindh Government Ordinance No. XII of 1993 dated 6th October, 1993 and the Charter granted by Governor of Sindh on 8th October, 1993. The Act was passed by the provincial Assembly of Sindh on 17th September, 1995 and assented by Governor of Sindh on 16th October 1995, and published in the Gazette as “Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, Act 1995 – Sindh Act No. X of 1995.”
20th Century was the Century of Science and Technology. The mammoth growth in technology changed the scenario and complexion of the globe. After the creation of Pakistan, it was felt that without sufficient number of educational Institutions and particularly the Technical Education Institutions the country would not be able to keep pace with the fast advancing World. The Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association of Pakistan (AMUOBA), which was a body of old students of Aligarh Muslim University, had, as one of its objectives, to promote education in Pakistan with particular emphasis on technical education. AMUOBA had strong feeling that ample facilities for technical education were highly essential for Pakistan, if it had to stand on strong footings.
The adequate facilities of technical education could only bring to fore the dynamic minds that could rise to the occasion to change the complex situation, arising from the paucity of technical hands and growing intimacy between economy and technology. It had become a time honored fact that innovation in technology was the main driver towards growth and prosperity. AMUOBA had been striving for establishing educational institutions. It was successful in opening schools and a technical institution that imparted education up to the Diploma level. But its ultimate aim was to set up a University in keeping with the philosophy of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, who had transformed the lot of Indian Muslim by setting up educational institutions at Aligarh.
The efforts of AMUOBA bore fruit when the Governor of Sindh issued an ordinance for the establishment of Sir Syed University of Engineering &Technology and the university started in the year 1994.
