## What is Gravitation?

Gravitation is a force existing among all material objects on Earth. Any two objects or particles with non-zero mass will be attracted towards each other through the force of gravitation. Gravity functions on objects of all dimensions from subatomic particles to groups of galaxies. Gravitation is one of the most important concepts in physical science. Isaac Newton defined the popular Law of Universal Gravitation.

Newton put forward his hypothesis that the force of gravity between any two sphere-shaped objects of constant mass is directly relative to the product of their masses and in reverse proportional to the square of the distance between their midpoints. As per this law, if m1 and m2 are the masses of any two objects and d is the distance between their centers then the force of gravitation is given by the below-listed formula.

f = km1m2/d2

k= constant depending on the units specified for m1 and m2.

d= distance between the object’ centers.

Newton’s philosophies about gravitation were later modified in the 20th century when Albert Einstein formulated the general theory of relativity. Einstein found that the nature of the force of gravity is similar to the nature of the force applied to any object that undertakes acceleration. This is called the Principle of Equivalence. Also, he demonstrated that gravitation fields can result in space and time. The hypothesis is validated by experimentation.

Each and every object in the universe is surrounded by a gravitational field. Accordingly, the gravitational field of the sun is much stronger than that of the Earth. For that reason, the gravitational field of the Earth is powerful in the area of an individual standing on the surface in comparison to the altitude of a satellite in orbit. Nonetheless, the gravitational field surrounds any object extending indeterminately in all directions. Each particle on this planet is gravitationally attracted to another particle which makes for an important consideration in the formulation of philosophies concerning how the universe is formed, evolved and what fortune is ultimately looking forward to.
